Following on from our work at Monkmoor Police Station the students involved in the project were invited to a buffet lunch to thank them for all the work they have undertaken as volunteers at the station, for National Volunteers week.  They were also presented with certificates and had an amazing experience.

The project started when Monkmoor Police Station approached us to ask us if we had any students that would be willing to volunteer one day a week to maintain their gardens/grounds. We then identified some students in sixth form as they are interested in Horticulture and the project also links in to their Duke of Edinburgh and ASDAN awards. Students were involved in the project from the beginning. They chose the tools they needed, these were then brought by the Police Station. They have been given yellow jackets which have volunteer on the back so that they are identifiable. The project is a long term one – possibly running over 3 years. Students are now choosing which colour to paint the fence, the bench and which flowers they would like to plant. They are enjoying the experience and have said;

“We are learning about health and safety at work, time management and how to interact with different people.”
